Island Time

Groupon –  I’m definitely guilty of getting a little trigger-happy and then forgetting about them until 6 days before they expire.

LOOK AT THIS FUN THING I GOT US, BRI!  WE’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO THIS!!!”

… <8 months later>…

“STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING WE HAVE TO GO TO _____ RIGHT NOW SO I DIDN’T WASTE $____ ON THIS DAMN GROUPON COME ON LET’S GO.”

So I booked two seats on a day trip out to Catalina, an island 20-some miles off the California coast.

Friday we woke up to torrential rain.  I swear it only rains in SoCal when we have visitors or fun things planned.

Once we were settled into the (dry & warm) Flyer cabin, we cruised away from Newport and found a break in the weather.

An hour later we docked at Catalina where we were met with a mostly cool, somewhat drizzly, randomly down-poury day.  Not ideal for exploring land on foot, but we found ways to keep ourselves entertained :

All day people kept asking us if we were “there for the race”.  I’m all, RACE?! WHAT RACE?!! WHERE DO I REGISTER???”

Luckily it was one of those silly ones you need a bike and a wetsuit for, so Brian was off the hook of getting hostaged into a last-minute overnight trip.  Something about $900 hotel room and not being able to change our boat tickets back to the mainland or something…

Oh and the fact I don’t swim.

Regardless, I ate up the fact that everyone thought we looked like triathletes.  And then I ate an entire order of chips & salsa.

And then we went home and I PR’d the 10k.  The end.

We’ll be back Catalina – Like maybe in March for this??

  1. OOOOOOOMG, I totally want to do Catalina. A LOT.

The only time I’ve been to Catalina was when I had to pick up #1 from a week-long field trip to the island. She got sick on night 1. True story. Most expensive $500-one-day-field-trip ever.

  2. i hadn’t been to catalina in like 15 years. Out of pure coincidence, our friends ended up going to same weekend we were going. Thank goodness too because we would have been bored out of our minds. it ended up being okay after the alcohol kicked in ; )

  3. While on our honeymoon the resort had tequila bottles shaped like a pregnant woman…. I’m going to guess that your phallic bottle got near my woman bottle and made her prego…. I also noted NOT to drink said prego tequila for fear I’d end up in the same way on my honeymoon!~ Looks like a fun trip!!!

  4. I went to Catalina camping in college (last time I will ever go camping, thankyouverymuch) and all I remember is some weird drink at the bar called buffalo milk or something equally disgusting. I also recall how expensive beer was except for Blue Ribbon.

Way to get your money’s worth, I would of done the same.

  6. Haha I am just like that with my Groupon, Living Social, etc deals. By the end of the year I have pilates, bootcamp, 2 months of kickboxing, a massage, and some bakery items to use before they expire. Oh and I almost forgot paddleboarding in San Diego before February- I hope they have wetsuits brrr! I’m a bit of an addict.
