Ventura Training, wk3–Where the Upside Down Ones Look Best

Another week of no drinking on weekdays, tracking food, (kind of) doing core and strength stuff, and other responsible runner-ness down. Still feeling good sans some extra tight calves and a cranky piriformis; making extra hard, inappropriate love to my grid roller these days. Here’s hoping if the neighbors are peeping in our windows they’re runners too and get it.

  • Sunday – rest, per usual
  • Monday – 6 easy PM miles, strides.
    • A few people have asked about strides – they’re a drill done to tighten up form and sneak a little speed into easy runs, or warm up for a race. Simply, you run close to a sprint for a short duration. I don’t time or measure them, just build speed for 15 steps, maintain for 25 (should be ~85% max speed), then decelerate for 15 steps. 6-10 reps with a short break. – more
  • Tuesday16x400m – 8×4 60sec rest, 3:00 rest, 8×4 60sec. 7 miles total. 60min hard SUP (thought headwind was bad for running – being out a ways from shore with tired arms is a pretty frightening feeling)
  • Wednesday – 35 minute bike ride. Lots of handstand practice, one of my funemployment bucket list “me” goals.

taking my circus show on the road. somewhere.

  • Thursday1-3-2 Tempo. 7:30, 7:29, 7:13
  • Friday – 5 easy on a new route. Drove out to Fountain Valley and took in the frisbee dudes, picnicers, bad golfers, and wedding photo shoot at Mile Square Park. Pretty cool spot.
  • Saturday – 18 mile solo long run. Because no one will run with me when I look like this :

IMG_1780

no shame in my bed head, inside-out bra (on purpose – eliminates band chaffing), neon sock hot mess long run game

Spent most of the run relishing the good fortune of overcast, cool, late morning weather. Pinky promise to never forget how lucky we are living in this surreal SoCal bubble, other than during tax season or while driving because one out of ten people know how to operate a damn motor vehicle without putting the entire road in life-threatening danger.

The rest of the 9-out-9-back was entertained by a slightly stale playlist, daydreams of lunch, and a bevy of interesting sights…

No but seriously, Raider Nation, there’s still two months until football season. Cool your effing jets.

Experimenting with fueling – I get legit stomach growling hungry on long runs (um prob bc I never go more than a few hours without eating) so I wanted to try taking “real food” to supplement gels/chews. I broke up a Picky Bar and ate a ~25cal piece each mile from 6-9. Earlier than I’d normally fuel, but since it’s not fast carbs like gels/chews I wanted to give it more time. Not sure on the science of that, but my brain logic says it makes sense. Plus eating something that tastes like brownie bites is much more fun and palatable than nasty goop. As proven when I spent all of mile 14 choking down a cherry chocolate goop trying not to gag.

100 calories Picky Bars miles 6-9, 100 calories Clif gel mile 14, 30 oz Nuun

Still a work in progress – who knows if I’ll be able to take down real food while running race pace or if it’ll somehow retaliate at mile 20+, but isn’t that the fun of trialing? The exciting unknown threats that could totally derail your plans on the big day??!

* BONUS GIVEAWAY TIME! *

Here’s your reward for making it to the bottom of another boring training recap post. Camelbak wants to give a Quick Grip handheld like mine to some thirsty summer runner. The smaller 10oz bottle is a nice change from my big old 20oz’er and the pocket fits Picky bites just right.

camelbak quick draw

* To enter just leave a comment telling me what you dream about on a hades hot run. Freeze pop? Ice cream? Frosty mug of crisp pale ale? Jumping naked into a January snow pile? Will pick a winner Wednesday. No bonus entries cuz that shit gets too complicated.

Good luck! I’m off to scrub the dirty footprints off my handstand wall.

  1. There a froyo place near the trail that I run and I make deals with myself that if I finish my goal miles then I get to have froyo afterwards. That usually does the trick for me even though I’m a hot mess when I roll into the place. ;)

  2. There’s a bobcat on the loose in Pittsburgh, so on my last hades, trail run, I dreamt about how I would use my stun gun on it, if it wouldn’t let me pet him/her.
Otherwise, I’m usually dreaming an icy Coke, non-diet, don’t judge.

  3. Oh, the promise of a Raspberry Framboise/Hefe combo is all it takes to get me through a long run. Light, fruity and COLD – I kinda want one now as a bedtime snackaroo.

  4. Yes please! I don’t have to deal with too many hot-as-Hades runs (Alaska), but when it’s hot I spend less time dreaming about cold things and more time dropping f-bombs.

  5. Ooh – ice cream. Definitely. And the cool swimming pool I’m going to jump in when I get home. And air conditioning. Florida is hot. ;-)

  6. an iced coffee all blended up in my blender.

ALSO, I get SO hungry on Long runs too, like i need a buffet kind of hunger. Hadn’t thought about trying to incorporate “real food” into mid-run fueling. I’ll give it a try!

  7. First I think, why the eff didn’t I get up earlier? How can I keep my sunglasses from fogging up? Does spitting in them work like swim goggles, or is that just a myth? Then I usually think about what I’m going to eat or drink when I get back home, preferably an adult beverage and something ending in -burger.

  8. I dream of sprinklers! Last week I even found there were sprinklers on the soccer field at the local track during a 10k run – HEAVEN, I ran through them a dozen times while doing laps of the track.

  9. I look forward to changing into my bathing suit while my husband fills the doggy pool with ice cold water and then I go and sit in the “ice bath” while my dog dives on me in the 6 inches of water. Love it!

  10. I have been wanting one of these all summer! I found one at Lululemon, but just couldn’t shell out the cash right then. On my runs, I dream about the day when I am able to run longer without feeling near death. I just look forward to my future self.

  11. I think about dying . . . jk, maybe. I do look at older people who are just walking and think to myself that if I’ve gotten this far, then I might as well finish so that I don’t have to repeat the torture again.

  12. I always think about jumping straight into the pool when I return from my run, just ditch the electronic gear and dive in, then float until my stomach starts rumbling for food.

  13. The last race I did had a giant bucket of ice water with kitchen sponges in it. Grabbing a few of those puppies and sticking them in my hair, shirt, etc. is what I think about now. They’re awesome!

Re the Pickybars: I use them on long trail runs — 1/4 bar every 10-15 min. They are totally steady in my stomach and never have caused any problems. Good variety from Shot Bloks, Gu, etc.

  14. I dream of anything cold. It was 81* (and probably 90+% humidity) this morning at 5 when we ran. Popsicles, jump in a cold pool, even just stepping into AC!!

  15. Ah, usually just being done and sitting down with more cold, cold water. Or jumping into the dirty creek I’m running along, because on those really hot days, I’m -this- close to turning a blind eye to the grossness for the sake of the coolness.

  16. Since I’m in Texas we really only have variations of summer… no real seasons. Right now we’re in HOT AS ..OH! my post is on fire!!!!!! AHHHHH!!!!! RUN OUAL!!!

Since my comment above caught on fire, I will tell you what I dream about in Texas after my runs. I dream about transporting my soul into a polar bear’s body in the middle of winter. I would be one of those bears from the Coca Cola commercials and sliiiiiide down the hill to my other polar bear family members. We’d all be like “look how cute we are drinking our pop, WHAT, WHAT!” Do they even have those commercials anymore? If not, there is a whole generation missing out. So yea, that’s what I’d do…if I could.

  20. I normally dream of juicy cantaloupe when I’m out on a really hot run. Well, that or ice cold beer – I definitely use that as an incentive for the long run days.

  21. So I am totally addicted to those Edy’s Outshine bars and that’s what I usually end up eating after a super sweaty run. BUT what I am thinking of while it’s happening is a LARGE Dunkin Donuts iced coffee, coconut flavor.

  22. I dream about either Fro Yo or a big, frosty cold beer. Cold beer tastes amazing after a sweaty run session in the heat :)
By the way, you’re getting so speedy! I would totally run 18 miles with you and your bed head. I would just appreciate having someone to run with! I hardly ever get to run with anyone!

  25. I ALSO got hit in the face by a flying beetle on my long run – but it was on the Jeffrey Rd 5 overpass, so drivers on the 5, you’re welcome for the free show. Those beetles are fucking horrifying.

This is totally not an entry, I don’t need a 5th handheld.

  26. I always dream of ice cream sundaes on hot days on my long runs pretty much every single time for years. And I always plan on following through and buying or making one once I’ve finished my run, but that has literally only happened once in all the years. I guess if it’s a difficult run, I dont want to leave the house afterwards, or just want to fuel on some healthy food and keep that good-burn feeling.

  27. No summer hot running right now because I’m still in this bitch boot, but I remember last summer when I absolutely could not wait to get an iced coffee after my long run. It was so good once I finally got it!

  31. My apt pool. Literally the last 3 miles of any and all of my runs are in a NO SHADE path back to my place in DC. “time.for.pool.time.for.pool” is repeated over and over until I get home. Its always fun trying to put on a bathing suit while sweating but I always manage.

A couple times I’ve thought about skinny dipping in a nice cool lake, but then realized that everyone else at the beach probably wouldn’t enjoy that… So usually I think about how awesome it will be to face plant into my bed with the fan turned on high and napping! The fact that I’m always soo tired after my long runs is proof that I have yet to figure out the whole fueling thing!

I just moved to Texas (moving in July, completely brilliant idea!), and am still getting used to the whole sweating out my entire body weight during runs, but tend to get through them daydreaming of running through sprinklers (why oh why are they always set so far off any path?!) before slip n’ sliding into a gigantic pile of snow.

  46. ***don’t enter me in the giveaway. I already have this exact handheld bottle so I want someone else to win it but….I did want to say that it’s my FAVORITE of all the handhelds I’ve used!

Also, it’s good to take in a steady amount of carbs and calories instead of just the spaced out gels! When I ran my marathon I used Hammer Heed drink mix to provide me with carbs at a more constant pace than gels alone. I just carried it in my handheld and then took regular water at water stops.

When I’m running in the extreme heat (because in Florida it’s always some type of hot) I dream of swimming pools and fruit smoothies. Sometimes I try and zone out thinking about how pretty it is when we run in the Keys.

On good weather runs though, I just spend miles dreaming up whatever I’m going to eat- usually waffles.
